First case of irreversible damage in the eyes of a 2-year-old gir

A two-year-old girl in east China has developed severe short-sightedness after playing on a smartphone every day for a year. Her parents introduced her to a Smartphone when she was a year old to keep her busy and to calm her down, although the duration of time the child used the device is not clear.

Dr. Liu Li, of the Yangzhou Child and Mother Care Services Center, said the girl's condition was irreversible and that her vision could get worse over time.

She added that the girl obviously spent to too much time in front of the smartphone screen and that she should not have been exposed to it at such an early age, according to the Daily Mail.

The World Health Organization (WHO) warned in April of this year that babies under the age of one should never be exposed to electronic screens and that children between two and four years should not use more than one hour each day on the screens.

“Limiting, and in some cases eliminating, the time of screen usage for children under five will result in healthier adults”, said a spokesperson of the organization.

The experiments presented at the College of Physicians and RCC-Harvard in 2017 by Reticare and the University Complutense Madrid (UCM) warned of an additional and a more serious problem that will most likely effect this girl's vision, namely retinal damage. Exposed to screens without protection, the said experiments with laboratory animals demonstrated a loss of 23% of their vision in only 3 months, while the ones equipped with Reticare eye protectors on their screens had no notable losses.

The effects which we have been warning for the past five years are beginning to appear and still, not realizing the seriousness of the situation, neither the administration of most schools, nor those at most companies have taken action to protect their people.

It is incomprehensible that the responsible parties at organizations and institutions as well as each of us, especially parents, do not take action to stop this insanity immediately to protect our health. What are we waiting for? Are we waiting for the validation of such occurrences that we, our own children, our family or friends are affected by irreversible eye damage?

Both the affected child and the millions of people who are in front of screens all day, suffering without realizing what’s happening, do not deserve that pain and that sorrow to live through it for the rest of their lives.

A two-year-old girl has been diagnosed with severe eye damage after using screens for a single year.
